Taking Ownership

We’ve all been there: you do the best you can to make a good decision and it still goes bad. What happened? Not enough time? Too much noise? Somebody else dropped the ball first?

I want you to make peace with this: the decision was still yours.

Taking full ownership of your decisions, both good and bad, is about power. The moment you stop explaining away a poor decision, you start building the discipline to make a better one next time.

A good approach when you have a setback is to understand your state of mind and the philosophy that went into the decision. There may have been some emotions there or a distortion of the facts that led to the undesired outcome.

Leadership isn’t about avoiding pressure. Pressure and responsibility are inherent in any job as a leader. It’s about what you do in the moments before you take action.

Are you taking a breath or going off of impulse?

Ask yourself: when was the last time you made a decision reactively instead of deliberately?

What would it have looked like to pause for ten seconds first?

Take a moment to breathe and process your thoughts before your next decision. That’s often the entire gap between a reactive leader and a resilient one.

Remember to always be your best self!
