The Moment Everyone Is Watching
When you're operating at the scene of an emergency, there's always an audience. The stakes are much higher than any sporting event or concert. Their house might be on fire or a loved one might be trapped in a vehicle.
It's going to be pretty obvious very quickly if you have a plan and whether or not that plan is working. You need to train your mind for those events and fill it with knowledge and create a highly effective decision-making process that will get you through the most difficult challenges.
When things are at their worst, people expect you to be at your best. That means you are modeling confidence, clarity, and communication -not because you have all the answers, but because you know how to think clearly when it counts.
The leaders I coach are looking to sharpen their skills and learn how to read the situation accurately in real time so that they can make an effective decision. They are aware of their own thoughts and tendencies, and they're able to keep their emotions in check so that the decision is made with clarity.
As you move through this next week, you may have an opportunity to make an important decision. I would invite you to step back and take a deep breath. You may want to ask yourself several questions:
Am I responding to what’s actually happening, or to how I feel about what’s happening?
What happens if I do nothing?
What are some of the options here?
What were some of the previous decisions that got us to where we are right now?
Is the decision that I'm going to make in alignment with my goals and long-term outlook?
What are some of the emotions I'm experiencing around this decision, and where do they come from?
Remember to be your best self!
